Listen to this: Taking Back Sunday - El Paso

When I heard that Taking Back Sunday were getting back to the Tell All Your Friends-era line up, I was more than a little excited. I adore that record, it is genuinely brilliant. One could easily draw comparisons with Brand New, but most of the album doesn’t sound too much like them. It’s far more technical than anything on Your Favorite Weapon and far closer to pop-punk than anything on Deja Entendu. Adam Lazzara’s lyrics as well are far more eloquently worded than anything on Your Favorite Weapon.

As well all know, the following three Taking Back Sunday albums were, for the most part, poor. Whilst each contained a few great songs, they were lacking something, and this only fuelled my excitement for the reunion of the “classic” line-up.

The first taste of the bands new album, rumoured to be self-titled and due out in the summer, can be heard below and is entitled ‘El Paso’. It is disappointing, to say the least. Whilst it isn’t exactly a bad song, they appear to have been unable to regain the individuality of Tell All Your Friends. Whilst it’s good they haven’t just re-hashed that record, the could have gone for something further away from the latest Brand New record, Daisy. The album should still be an interesting and hopefully good listen, but my teenaged excitement has been doused somewhat.
